This paper will provide an outline of the findings of a research project commissioned by the SMA on grant funding awarded to projects in music analysis. The research aims to establish a) the proportion of grant funding allocated to projects in music analysis as opposed to other subdisciplines of music and b) whether or to what extent this proportion accurately reflects the total volume of research output in music analysis within the UK during the time period under investigation.

The paper will examine the correlations between grant funding awarded to individuals by the British Academy, Leverhulme Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council between 2005 and 2025 and the wider music-analytical research output recorded in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) during these years. In so doing, the paper will give an overview of the proportion of funding awarded to projects in music analysis and how this compares to the total amount of funding allocated to music-related research projects, as well as to that awarded to other subdisciplines of music. Thereafter, it will detail the proportion of the REF output which pertains specifically to music analysis and discuss the extent to which this is reflected in the funding awarded by the organisations listed above.

The paper will situate this data more widely within the current UK music-analytical landscape by discussing it in relation to Donn and Pace's (2023) report on the representation of music analysis in UK undergraduate curricula, Pace's (2024) research with wider data on the representation of different musical sub-disciplines within UK music departments, and relating to the closure of departments offering training in music analysis. Thus, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current UK funding landscape as it relates to music analysis as well as outlining some the wider factors which have contributed to its current state.
